As you envision your dream wedding, do you picture it bathed in soft, natural Light and Airy Wedding Photography or Dark and Moody style with contrast?
In this blog post, as a Professional Photographer in Chicago, I want to introduce the Light and Airy style of photography to find out if it suits your vision.
In the world of photography, various styles can evoke different emotions and capture moments in unique ways. One such style is the “light and airy” approach, which contrasts sharply with my own preference for the dark and moody aesthetic.
However, understanding the characteristics and techniques of the light and airy style can provide valuable insights, whether you’re a fellow photographer or someone looking to have their special moments captured in this way.

At Maloos Photography, I believe Light and airy photography is characterized by its bright, ethereal quality. This style often features soft, diffused lighting, pastel color palettes, and an overall sense of openness and tranquility.
The images typically have a high exposure, minimal shadows, and a dreamy, almost whimsical feel. This effect is achieved through both shooting techniques and post-processing methods that enhance the light, reduce contrast, and create a gentle, luminous look.

In post-processing, light and airy photographers focus on enhancing the brightness and reducing contrast. They often use tools to adjust exposure, highlights, shadows, and whites to achieve the desired soft look. Additionally, they might desaturate the colors slightly to maintain a pastel tone and ensure that no single element dominates the image.
During receptions, light and airy photographers tend to avoid harsh lighting. They prefer using an on-camera flash to bounce light off ceilings or walls, which creates a softer, more even illumination. On-camera flash is a straightforward technique where the flash unit is attached to the camera, making it easier to use and manage.
In contrast, off-camera flash involves positioning multiple flash units around the room, which requires more effort and planning. This technique allows for greater control over the lighting and can create dramatic, moody effects. While off-camera flash is more complex, I prefer this approach as it results in unique images with varied lighting, adding depth and interest to each shot.
In my next post, I will delve into the dark and moody style, sharing my techniques and explaining why I am drawn to this aesthetic. Stay tuned for a deeper exploration of the dramatic, evocative world of dark and moody photography.
