First dance tips for the bride and groom

For 41 years, I had no clue I shared a birthday with International Dance Day. Talk about cosmic alignment! No wonder I’ve got a soft spot for busting moves!

As a Chicago wedding photographer, I’m all about that first dance magic. Seriously, it’s like the cherry on top of the wedding cake. Emotions, guest reactions—heck, there’s a whole world of moments waiting to be snapped.

I have seen many weddings, and each has been super unique in many aspects but as far as I have learned, there are three types of couples when it comes to the dance.

Now, let’s talk about the couples. From behind the lens, I’ve seen it all:

1- The Pros: These lovebirds have been hitting the dance studio like they’re training for a dance-off championship. They’ve got moves smoother than butter, but hey, stress can trip up even the best dancers!

2- The Shy Ones: Bless their hearts, they’re either too shy to dance or they’re zipping across the dance floor like they’re in a race. Quick steps, quick pics—that’s the motto.

3- The Non-Dancers: You know, the ones who’d rather watch a dance-off than join it. I once asked a bride about the first dance time, and she turned to her hubby like, “Wait, are we dancing tonight?”

But fear not! I’ve got game plans for every scenario. But before I bust a move with my camera, it’s all about setting up the lights. Safety first, folks.

Once I’ve got that covered, it’s time to capture the magic. When it comes to the first dance, I’m like a ninja—quiet, sneaky, and always getting the shot. I avoid the DJ station like it’s a dance-off no-fly zone. It’s all about the bride and groom, folks!

Some pro tips for your big dance moment

Some pro tips for your big dance moment
  • Pick the Perfect Tune:
Choose a first dance wedding song that speaks to both of you. In classical music, maybe it’s the lyrics, maybe it’s the memories—it’s got to have that special something.
  • Practice Makes Perfect:
Suit up, strap on those formal shoes, and practice! Trust me, you don’t want to faceplant in that elegant dress on the big day.
  • Short and Sweet:
Keep it snappy! Nobody wants to watch a marathon dance-off. Short, sweet, and straight to the heart—that’s the ticket.

Remember, your first dance is a once-in-a-lifetime moment. Soak it in, feel the love, and let those happy feet do their thing!
