There’s something so exciting about planning your engagement photo session—the thrill of choosing outfits, imagining scenic backdrops, and feeling that rush of affection when you realize these photos will capture the start of your married life.
I’ve been lucky to photograph couples across Chicago, from the bustling downtown streets to the charming shores of Evanston and Wilmette. Over the years, I’ve discovered that the secret to a smooth, memorable experience is understanding exactly how long your session should be and what factors can affect that timeline.
In my work as a Chicago engagement photographer, I offer two distinct session options to fit your style, schedule and budget. The first is what I call a “full session,” which lasts about an hour (sometimes a bit longer, if we’re really in the zone) and can take place anywhere in the city. Want to explore a favorite neighborhood café or maybe the iconic skyline by the lake?
We can do it all! The second option is a “mini session,” a quicker 20–30-minute shoot usually held in the north of Chicago—think Evanston or Wilmette, areas where I know every charming corner by heart. Both sessions are super fun, and they’re a fantastic way to get comfortable with the camera before your wedding day.
So, how do you decide which session is right for you? Consider a few key factors. First, think about how many locations you’d like to feature. If you’re eager to hop between multiple spots, a longer session might be best.
Likewise, outfit changes can add variety but also increase the time you’ll need. Don’t forget to factor in any special props—like a vintage car, balloons, or even including your pup in the fun. Anything extra will require a little more coordination and, of course, time.
To create dreamy images, most couples love scheduling their session during the Golden Hour—right after sunrise or just before sunset—when the light has that warm, romantic glow. Morning sessions in Chicago can offer quieter streets and a calm energy, while late afternoon or early evening shoots can make for beautiful, luminous backdrops. Keep an eye on Chicago’s ever-changing weather, though. A flexible schedule often works best if you’re aiming for the perfect golden-hour portrait.
Once our session wraps, I’ll dive into the editing process to bring out each photo’s unique charm. For mini sessions, your final images are typically ready within a couple of weeks. For full sessions, you can expect your curated gallery in about two weeks, giving me time to polish each shot and ensure it truly shines.
Plan Your Looks: Comfort is key. Choose outfits that make you feel confident yet relaxed. My engagement sessions are fun, with lots of movement and laughter, so it is important to be comfortable.
Communicate Your Vision: Don’t hesitate to share your ideas or any special must-have shots.
Enjoy the Moment: Genuine laughter and authentic connection create the best candid moments. At the end of each session, people usually say that they feel very comfortable and relaxed and had fun in front of my lens.
Trust Your Photographer: I’m here to guide you through poses, angles, and locations that highlight your love story.
Whether you’re opting for a 20–30-minute mini-session in Evanston or a full hour exploring the vibrant streets of Chicago, the most important thing is to have fun and savor this step of your wedding journey.
Each session offers a unique blend of adventure and intimacy, capturing the little details and big emotions that make your relationship one of a kind. By knowing what to expect and planning ahead, you’ll walk away with images that feel genuine, radiant, and undeniably you.
